A soft bounce refers to an email that is temporarily undeliverable. Unlike a hard bounce, which points to a permanent delivery failure (for instance, an invalid email address), a soft bounce refers to a temporary delivery failure. This can be because of high traffic, and therefore, the sender’s inbox is full, or it might be a problem with the server, or the recipient’s mailbox could have been closed for a while.
Typically, soft bounces are normal with email campaigns and may not call for an instant response. However, soft bounces occur relatively often, and too many of them eventually affect the sender's reputation and the deliverability of e-mail messages.
Mailbox Full: This can occur if the recipient's inbox is full.
Temporary Server Issues: It is always possible for the email servers to be down, or for them to be running slower than usual.
Large Attachments: Emails exceeding the size limit are temporarily rejected.
Spam Filters: Spam controls can sometimes delete emails for a while.
Impact on Deliverability: Soft bounces can reduce the sender's reputation and future email delivery chances.
Temporary Issue: Since soft bounces are usually transitory, the particular message may be effectively delivered during the next try.
Tracking Performance: Bounce rates can help track if the problem is unique to the campaign, or if it is a deliverability problem.
